Premium Stainless Electrode for Joining Stainless Steel to Carbon Steel

Eagle 309L-16 is a premium low-carbon stainless steel electrode designed for joining dissimilar steels, especially stainless steel to carbon steel.

Its higher-alloy stainless deposit provides excellent strength and ductility while helping accommodate the dilution that occurs when welding different base metals together.

Eagle 309L-16 can also be used as a buffer layer before hardfacing or stainless cladding, making it a versatile choice for repair, fabrication and maintenance work. The product is certified by CWB to CSA W48.

Dissimilar Metals. Strong Welds. Reliable Repair.

Eagle 309L-16 is recommended for:

Joining stainless steel to carbon steel
Joining dissimilar steels
Stainless steel repair
Carbon steel to stainless fabrication
Buffer layers before cladding
Buffer layers before hardfacing
Maintenance welding
Industrial repair
General stainless fabrication

Designed for applications where different base metals must be joined reliably.

Use AC or DC Reverse [+] Polarity.
Clean weld areas thoroughly with a grinder or stainless steel wire brush.

Remove cracks or damaged material where required. Eagle 188 airless gouging electrodes may be used for weld preparation.

Maintain a short arc length and use stringer beads for best results.

Eagle 309L-16 is a high-strength stainless steel electrode designed primarily for joining dissimilar steels.

It is especially useful when welding stainless steel to carbon steel, where its higher chromium and nickel alloy content helps tolerate dilution from the carbon steel side of the joint.
It can also be used as a buffer or intermediate layer before stainless cladding or hardfacing.

Why Eagle 309L-16?

Excellent for dissimilar metals — specifically suited for stainless-to-carbon-steel joining.

Strong and ductile deposit — approximately 87,000 psi tensile strength with 36% elongation.

Useful as a buffer layer — ideal before cladding or hardfacing.

All-position performance — suitable for flat, horizontal, vertical and overhead welding.

AC or DC capability — works with a wide range of welding power sources.
309L-16 or 308L-16?
Choose Eagle 309L-16 when joining stainless steel to carbon steel or other dissimilar steels, or when you need a buffer layer before cladding or hardfacing.
Choose Eagle 308L-16 when joining similar 300-series stainless steels, especially 301, 302, 304 and 308.
In simple terms:
309L-16 = stainless to carbon steel / dissimilar metals
308L-16 = stainless to stainless
