ER309L MIG Wire for Stainless-to-Carbon Steel and Dissimilar Metal Welding

Eagle ER309L is a premium low-carbon stainless steel MIG wire designed for joining 300-series stainless steels to carbon or low-alloy steels, as well as welding similar 309/309L stainless alloys. Hobart specifically lists ER309/309L for these applications.

Its higher chromium and nickel content helps maintain a sound stainless weld deposit when dilution occurs from the carbon-steel side of a dissimilar joint.

Dissimilar Metals. Strong Welds. Reliable Stainless MIG Performance.

Eagle ER309L MIG Wire is recommended for:

Stainless steel to carbon steel
Stainless steel to low-alloy steel
309 and 309L stainless steel
Dissimilar metal joints
Clad steel
Petrochemical fabrication
Food and beverage equipment
Pulp and paper equipment
Industrial repair
General fabrication

ER309L is especially useful where dissimilar metals need to be joined reliably.

Clean the weld area thoroughly before welding.

Remove oil, grease, dirt, coatings and other surface contamination.

Use a dedicated stainless steel wire brush where mechanical cleaning is required to help prevent carbon-steel contamination.

Operate on DC Reverse [+] / DCEP polarity.

Use an appropriate stainless MIG shielding gas and adjust voltage, wire-feed speed, travel speed and gas flow according to wire diameter, material thickness and joint design.

Eagle ER309L is a low-carbon austenitic stainless steel solid MIG wire designed primarily for dissimilar-metal welding.

Typical ER309L chemistry contains approximately 23–25% chromium and 12–14% nickel, with low carbon content. Published Hobart data shows typical weld-metal values around 24% chromium, 13.5% nickel, 87,000 psi tensile strength, 59,000 psi yield strength and 40% elongation.

Why Eagle ER309L MIG Wire?

Excellent for dissimilar metals — ideal for joining stainless steel to carbon or low-alloy steels.

Higher alloy content — helps accommodate dilution from the carbon-steel side of the joint.

Strong mechanical properties — typical published data is approximately 87,000 psi tensile strength and 40% elongation.

Low-carbon stainless filler — helps reduce susceptibility to sensitization and intergranular corrosion.

ER309L, ER308L or ER316L MIG?

Choose ER309L when joining stainless steel to carbon steel or other dissimilar steels.

Choose ER308L for 304/304L and similar stainless-to-stainless welding.

Choose ER316L for 316/316L stainless and applications requiring improved pitting and corrosion resistance.

In simple terms:
ER309L = stainless-to-carbon steel / dissimilar metals
ER308L = standard stainless-to-stainless
ER316L = higher corrosion resistance
