Fine Nickel-Base Spray Powder for Machinable Build-Up and Cast Iron Repair

Eagle P-55 is a high-quality nickel-base spray powder designed for machinable build-up and dimensional restorationon cast iron, nickel alloys, stainless steel and steel.

Its extremely fine, pure nickel-based composition allows it to wet out easily on cast iron and steel, making it especially useful for smooth, controlled build-up applications.

With a hardness of approximately 15–17 HRC, Eagle P-55 produces a soft, fully machinable deposit that can be finished back to the required dimension after spraying.

Fine Powder. Easy Wetting. Fully Machinable.

Eagle P-55 Specification Sheet

Eagle P-55 is recommended for:

Cast iron repair
Steel build-up
Nickel alloy components
Stainless steel components
Dimensional restoration
Worn component rebuilding
Machinable repair surfaces
General maintenance and repair

The current Eagle specification specifically lists cast iron, nickel and stainless steel as suitable build-up applications, while the General Characteristics section also notes easy wetting on cast iron and steel.

Clean the surface thoroughly and remove oil, grease and scale.

Use a grinder to remove oxides where required.

Preheat the base metal to approximately 400°F.

Use a 1–1½" slightly carburizing flame and pre-spray the area to approximately 0.004" thickness.

Release the feed lever and heat until a sweating action occurs.

Weave the torch and add Eagle P-55 powder until the required dimension is achieved.

Allow the component to cool slowly.

Eagle P-55 is an extremely fine and pure nickel-based spray powder designed for machinable build-up applications.
It wets out easily on cast iron and steel and produces a soft deposit that is fully machinable, making it well suited for restoration work where the finished surface must be machined back to size.

Why Eagle P-55?

Fine nickel-base powder — promotes smooth application and easy wetting.

Fully machinable — ideal for parts that need post-spray machining.

Low hardness — approximately 15–17 HRC.
Excellent wetting characteristics — especially useful on cast iron and steel.

Versatile repair alloy — suitable for cast iron, nickel alloys, stainless steel and steel.

P-55 or P-33?

This comparison is useful, but I’d keep it conservative because the published hardness is very close.

P-33 = tough nickel-base machinable build-up powder, approximately 15–20 HRC

P-55 = extremely fine, pure nickel-base machinable powder, approximately 15–17 HRC, with easy wetting on cast iron and steel

So the clearest distinction is:
P-33 = general machinable build-up / underlay
P-55 = fine nickel-base machinable build-up with strong wetting characteristics
