Tool Steel Hardfacing Electrode for Shears, Dies and Metal Recycling

Eagle Shearbuild 45 is a premium all-position tool steel hardfacing electrode designed for rebuilding and protecting components exposed to metal-to-metal wear, repeated impact and cutting service.

With a deposited hardness of approximately 45 HRC, Shearbuild 45 provides a tough, durable hardfacing layer that is especially well suited for shears, dies, punches and metal recycling equipment. Unlike very hard abrasion-focused alloys, Shearbuild 45 is designed to tolerate repeated impact without excessive cracking or chipping.

Built for Shears. Built for Impact. Built to Stay Together.

Eagle Shearbuild 45 Specification Sheet

Eagle Shearbuild 45 is recommended for:

Scrap metal shears
Hydraulic shear blades
Dies
Punches
Cutting edges
Metal recycling equipment
High-impact metal-to-metal wear surfaces
Tool steel repair and rebuild work

It is especially well suited for applications where a harder, more brittle hardfacing deposit may be prone to cracking or breaking out under repeated impact.

AC or DC Reverse [+] Polarity

Clean the weld area thoroughly and remove fatigued or damaged metal before hardfacing. Use grinding where practical, or Eagle 188 airless gouging electrodes where additional material removal is required.

Use the lowest effective amperage while maintaining a medium arc length. Use stringer beads to help reduce heat input.

On low-carbon steel, a minimum of approximately three layers may be required to reduce dilution and achieve the desired deposit properties.

When welding tool steels, the existing Eagle procedure specifies preheating the part to approximately 1000°F.

Eagle Shearbuild 45 is a high-quality tool steel hardfacing electrode designed for high-speed and hot-working steels.
It produces a smooth arc transfer, performs in all positions, and deposits approximately 45 Rockwell C as welded.

Why Eagle Shearbuild 45?

Designed for shears and recycling equipment — developed for applications where cutting edges and wear surfaces experience repeated shock and metal-to-metal contact.

Multi-pass capability — unlike some very hard deposits, Shearbuild 45 can be built up in multiple layers without becoming excessively brittle. Eagle’s current hardfacing guide specifically notes that the deposit is intended not to “chonk out” under this kind of service.

Tool-steel deposit — provides a strong balance of hardness, toughness and edge retention.

All-position performance — useful for field and shop repairs where large components cannot always be positioned flat.

Shearbuild 45 or Higher-Hardness Hardfacing?

Choose Shearbuild 45 when the application involves shearing, cutting, metal-to-metal wear and repeated impact, especially where you want a deposit that can be built up in multiple passes.

Choose a harder 60+ HRC chromium-carbide product such as 636 when the primary problem is severe abrasive wear rather than repeated impact.

In simple terms:

Shearbuild 45 = toughness + metal-to-metal wear + multi-pass build-up
60+ HRC hardfacing = severe abrasion protection
